Sant Jordi 2013

This is the first time we write in an entry. In order to celebrate 23rd April Sant Jordi (Saint George), the Patron Saint of Catalunya and Catalan lovers, we’ve decided to create this special post.

The popular story tells that a terrible and fearful dragon lived in the nearby caverns of a village called Montblanc. In order to satisfy its hunger the villagers gave the monster two animals every day. But soon all the animals failed and a human victim was necessary to soothe the dragon’s hunger. Lots were drawn to determine the victim and one day, the misfortune fell on the king’s daughter. Just when she was about to be swallowed up by the dragon a knight of noble linage, called Sant Jordi, appeared and confronted the evil beast. The brave Knight thrust his spear into the dragon’s heart killing him deadly. At the place where the dragon poured out its blood a rosebush with red roses grew. Little by little, the tree drank the dragon’s blood and brilliant wonderful red roses appeared. Sant Jordi approached the tree and carefully, took the biggest and more sweetly-perfumed rose and gave it to the king’s daughter.

Sant Jordi is the most popular festivity in Catalunya where book and rose stalls and floods of people take over the streets of all Catalan towns and villages.

We hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we’ve enjoyed the day…and who knows, maybe next year you will join us!
